Big Baby

Big Baby

Brian: (with an air of superiority) "Did you know that the Monarch butterfly's migration can span up to 3,000 miles?"

Heather: (glancing up briefly) "Oh, that's interesting."

Brian: (undeterred by her lack of enthusiasm) "Indeed. You see, the Monarchs utilize a combination of environmental cues to navigate. It's quite a sophisticated process involving the sun's position and an internal circadian clock."

Heather: (returning to her book) "Uh-huh."

Brian: (leaning in, mistaking her indifference for ignorance) "And their metamorphosis is a marvel of nature! From a mere caterpillar to a chrysalis and then emerging as a beautiful butterfly... it's a biological miracle."

Heather: (without looking up) "Fascinating."

Brian: (sensing a chance to further impress) "Did you also know that butterflies can taste with their feet? And they only live for a few weeks, so every moment of their short life is spent seeking nectar and reproducing."

Heather: (finally looking up, with a hint of irritation) "Listen, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I came here to read and relax. I'm not really interested in a lecture on butterflies right now."

Brian: (taken aback) "Oh... well, I just thought you might want to learn something new."

Heather: (smiling politely) "I do, just not from you."

Brian: (deflated, but trying to save face) "Alright then, enjoy your book."

Brian: (later) "It's getting late are you done with your book? I'm getting tired. Let's go to sleep,"

Heather: (putting down the book, but turning on some quiet music) "You can turn out the light. I want to listen to music a little while longer."

Brian:"I don't think."

Heather:"I'll keep it low. You'll hardly hear it."

The 36-year-old Brian was frankly too exhausted to complain. Heather turned out the lights. The music sounded soothing. He quickly fell asleep.

Heather had been out of bed when Brian awoke.

Heather: "Good morning, sweetie! Let's get you ready for the day. How about we put on your big girl panties today?"

Brian: (in a questioning tone) "My big girl panties?"

Brian: (a moment later, his tone turned to defiant) "No, Mommy. I want to wear diapers."

Heather: "Oh, you don't want to wear your big girl panties today? Can you tell me why?"

Brian: "I don't like them. Diapers are better."

Heather: "I understand. Diapers can feel really comfy and safe. But remember how proud you were when you wore your big girl panties last time?"
