Commissioner Barbara Gordon Swap

Commissioner Barbara Gordon Swap

Part 1

In the secret laboratory beneath Police Headquarters-hidden behind a sliding panel that required three simultaneous key turns and a hearty “Holy security protocols!”-Commissioner Gordon paced beside the gleaming chrome-and-plastic monstrosity known only as the Mind Swapper 3000.

Batgirl-Barbara Gordon in her form-fitting purple-and-yellow costume, cape swirling, utility belt fully stocked-had answered her father’s urgent summons. She expected another Riddler riddle or perhaps a new Penguin umbrella that shot freeze rays. Instead she found the Commissioner already seated in one chair, looking unusually determined.

“Batgirl,” he said, voice steady, “please take the other seat. There is something I must show you.”

She sat. The moment the restraining clamps clicked softly into place (a feature the inventor had insisted upon “for safety”), the pre-activation sequence began. Soft humming. Lights cycling from green to amber. Batgirl’s limbs locked. Her mouth refused to form words. Only her eyes could move-wide with sudden alarm.

Commissioner Gordon leaned forward in the opposite chair, the clamps securing him as well. The machine’s central console whirred between them like a mechanical conscience.

“I have always felt… left out,” he confessed, the words tumbling out as the device warmed. “Batman and Robin swing across the rooftops, foil the most dangerous villains, and receive the cheers of a grateful city. I sit behind a desk. I issue orders. I light the Bat-Signal and wait. Decades of experience. I know every alley, every alias, every secret of this city. I know Batman better than almost anyone alive. When you joined the team, Batgirl… I realized the solution.”

He rested one hand on the large lever.

“It should be me. I will become you. With your youth, your agility, your place at their side-and my knowledge-I can finally make a real difference. Gotham needs more than a commissioner who files reports. It needs a crime-fighter who has lived every case file.”

Batgirl’s eyes blazed. She strained against the clamps. No sound escaped. Her final coherent thought, pure and terrified, rang only inside her own mind:

OH NO, DADDY! Don’t do it!

Gordon’s face softened for an instant-fatherly regret mixed with iron resolve-then he pulled the lever.

ZAP! ZING! KA-SWAP!

A cascade of multicolored lightning arced between the two chairs. The laboratory filled with the scent of ozone and slightly burnt popcorn (the machine’s only known side-effect). The humming rose to a triumphant crescendo, then cut off with a soft ping.

Silence.

Part 2

ZAP-THUD!

The Mind Swapper 3000’s final surge faded. The clamps on the purple-and-yellow chair hissed open and retracted with a soft mechanical sigh.

Batgirl’s body-now housing the mind of Commissioner Gordon-lay still for a heartbeat. Then the eyes fluttered open. A slow, astonished smile spread across the familiar masked face.

Although the form was smaller and shorter than the one he had known for decades, it felt stronger, lighter, more alive. Every muscle hummed with youthful energy. He-she-sat up, then stood in one fluid motion. No creaking joints. No careful bracing. Just effortless power.

The costume hugged every curve: the sleek cowl, the flowing yellow cape, the form-fitting jumpsuit, the heeled boots. Under the fabric she could feel the soft support of a bra against breasts that were no longer theoretical. The sensation was startling, intimate, and utterly foreign. Yet the body answered her will without hesitation. Muscle memory-Batgirl’s muscle memory-took over.

She tested it. A high front kick snapped out clean and sharp. A spinning back-kick followed, cape flaring. A quick series of punches and a graceful cartwheel across the laboratory floor. The different center of gravity should have thrown her off. The heeled boots should have made balance tricky. Instead, every movement landed perfectly, as if the body itself remembered exactly what to do.

On the utility belt, the Batgirl communicator crackled to life.

“Batgirl! Emergency at the Gotham Waterfront warehouses! The Joker’s men are attempting to hijack a shipment of laughing-gas canisters! Batman and Robin are en route-your assistance required!”

A thrill shot through her. Real crime-fighting. Side-by-side with the Dark Knight.

She keyed the communicator, voice steady and bright-Batgirl’s voice, shaped by Gordon’s intent.

“This is Batgirl. I’m on my way!”
