For The Best Mom and Dad stood with their son Travis between them in the family room, their faces lined with worry. The conversation had been building for weeks, ever since Travis first mentioned the idea of joining the military. They had tried to avoid it, hoping he might change his mind, but now it was clear that Travis was serious. "Travis, we need to talk about this," Mom began, her voice gentle but firm. "I know you think joining the military is a good idea, but have you really considered what that means? The risks? The reality of it all?" Dad nodded in agreement, leaning forward. "Son, you're smart, you've got so many options ahead of you. Why not think about college or trade school? You could have a great career without putting yourself in harm's way." Travis sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I've thought about it, believe me. But this is what I want to do. I want to serve my country and make a difference. It's something I feel really strongly about." Mom's eyes filled with tears, and she reached across the table to grab his hand. "Travis, we're not saying you can't make a difference. But there are other ways to serve, ways that don't involve putting your life on the line. What about volunteering, or working for a nonprofit? There are so many ways to help people." Dad added, "And think about how this will affect us, your family. We'll worry about you every single day. The military isn't just a job; it's a commitment that could take you away from us for years. We don't want to lose you." Travis looked down at the table, clearly torn. "I know it's hard to understand, but this is something I have to do. I've thought about everything you're saying, and I know it's dangerous, but it's important to me." Mom squeezed his hand tighter. "We're just scared, Travis. We've seen what war does to people, and how it changes them. We don't want that for you. We want you to have a future that's safe, where you can build a life without having to face the horrors of combat."
