Job At Camp --- Preface. Robert walked into the rustic office. Ms. Handkok was sitting behind her desk, in front of a large window with tan shades. Plants sprinkled around the room gave it a pastoral appearance. During the day, most of the main campgrounds could be seen from Ms. Handkok's windows. "Hello, Ms. Handkok." "Hello, Mr. Chambers. You've done well on your interviews. I am prepared to offer you employment." "Wonderful." "But, before I can, there is one last thing you need to do." 'What?" "As you know, we pride ourselves on being very empathetic." Robert nodded his head. "How we manage that, is that all our personnel lives a day as one of our campers to see how it feels to be one of the campers. All our campers are challenged in some way: autism, ADHD, other challenges." Robert didn't know where this was going. "You'll have to do the same." "I will?" "Yes, you are going to live a day as one of the campers. You'll do their activities to see what it's like." "But I'm an adult." "We don't group our campers by age, we group them by abilities. There are many ages in the same division. It makes sense because everyone despite their size is on the same level." "I'm not autistic. I would just be faking it." "Sadly, with medication, it's easier to make you seem challenged, than the other way around." "You mean I'll be taking drugs." "Medications. All our campers take medication. The pills you will be taking will make it harder to concentrate. When you're done, you have a true understanding of what it's like to be one of our campers." "I see. I don't think I want to do that." "Then I can't hire you." "What do I have to do?" "You'll be just another camper. Wake up, eat breakfast, be with the other campers, go to crafts, and any activities are scheduled. Just try and have fun. It's not that bad." "I guess that is alright." Ms. Handkok contacted her secretary. "Send Jessica in." "Jessica will be your cabin counselor. She'll help you join in with the others." Jessica led Robert out of Ms. Handkok's office into one of the cabins that housed the campers. "It's after lights out, everyone is asleep. Tonight you will be sleeping in one of the transitional rooms we reserve for new campers who have trouble adapting to the camping experience. You get some sleep and I'll see you in the morning," Jessica explained. ---- A New Day Robert sat on the edge of his bed, his hands clasped tightly in his lap. The first day of what would become his new job had been nerve-wracking. Both Ms. Handkok and Jessica had assured him he would have fun, but he wasn't so sure. He wanted to wait for Jessica to fetch him. Jessica entered his room. She had a cup of water in one hand and two pills in the other. "I don't think I want to take those." "You have to. It's the only way you will fit in. Besides that, the point is to see what it's like to be one of the campers." "But."
