Land of Make-Believe

Land of Make-Believe

When Mrs. Meadows arrived at her 34-year-old son's house, at first she was relieved. She hadn't talked to her son in quite a while and drove to his house to make sure that he was Okay. But when she saw him wearing a tutu with his T-shirt and women's tights, she knew something was wrong.

"Mommy, you're here!" Eddie squealed.

"I haven't heard from you in a while, I thought I should drop by."

"I'm glad you're here. I got a new friend want to meet him?"

"A new friend?"

"Yeah."

"Is he here?"

"Yeah, come with me."

Mrs. Meadows followed Eddie down the hall. The decor had changed since she had last been here. It seemed more juvenile and distinctly feminine. It had never looked this way before.

Entering Eddie's bedroom, it was even more girlie than the rest of the house. The bedroom it was light pink with white accents. The bed was in the shape of a pink castle. On the floor was a pastel rainbow rug. Even the books on the bookshelf were in pastel colors. A huge wicker basket contained toys and plushies. Sitting on the window was a teddy bear.

Eddie walked straight to the bear and said, "This is Kylie. He's my new best friend."

Mrs. Meadows didn't know what to do except to address the bear, "Hello, Kylie." The bear didn't answer.

"Don't be shy!" Eddie told his bear.

They waited a moment.

"I guess Kylie doesn't want to talk now."

Mrs. Meadows didn't want to leave Eddie alone. She made an emergency appointment with a psychiatrist. They left as soon as possible. Eddie sat in the back of his mother's car. He didn't feel it was right for him to sit in the front with her.
