Latham's Trinket
***Knock, Knock, Knock*** The hard insistent knocking on the front door of his dorm got Riley out of his seat. He had been relaxing, playing with a game on his laptop when he heard the sound. Riley hadn't gotten one step toward his door when the knocking continued. ***Knock, Knock, Knock*** "I'm coming. I'm coming!" *** Ring, Ring...Ring, Ring *** "I said I'm coming." "Who is it? "Jena," was the response from the other side of the door. Riley and Jena had been friends since virtually the first day they had moved on campus at Disco Tech State College. They met at the orientation with the flood of freshman and transfer students who were also entering. Although they never dated or seriously considered dating each other, they had found they had similar interests and were very compatible. Riley opened the door to see his friend standing there. She was a pretty five feet four with auburn hair and brown eyes. She wore what she usually wore, a skirted tee with black leggings and sneakers. Usually, she wore this type of apparel during her casual moments. "What's the emergency?" "Look what someone sent me?" Jena lifted her arm to shoulder level allowing the light blue crystal to slip out. It was attached to a chain, so it didn't fall to the floor. "What's that?" "It's one of Latham's Trinkets." "Give it back to Latham." "No, that is what it's called. It's very famous." "Never heard of it." "It's a magical gem. " "What does it do?" "I told you, it's magic. It grants wishes." "Wishes?" "Well, it only grants one wish per person actually. I looked it up. There are two trinkets, this one that is bluish in color and..." "Let me guess, the other one is pink." "No, the other one is clear." "Oh." "So, what does it do?" "I told you, it grants a wish." "What did you wish for?" "I haven't yet?" "You came to me for advice first?" "No." "Then what?" "As I was saying there are two trinkets, there is this one and the clear one. They're slightly different." "How so?" "The clear one grants wishes for the one who possesses it. The blue one gives wishes away to someone else." "What does that mean? You mean you are giving me a wish? I don't want one. I've seen enough movies where it never works out." "No, I want to give the trinket to you and then you can grant my wish." "I see. Mistress, what wish would you like?" "I want to marry Lewis Charles Ellis." Everyone on campus knows who Lewis Ellis is. He is the quarterback for the Disco Tech football team. He led his team to victory in one of the bowl games. The rest of the team wasn't good enough to compete for the national title, but his skills were undeniable. He was the first pick in the football draft. Even if he never played in the NFL, his fortune was assured. "He has everything I want in a husband: handsome, smart, rich, and famous." "Is he nice?" "Yeah, he's fantastic." "So, if that is what you want. OK, it's yours." "You have to be holding the charm." "OK, give it to me and then make your wish."
