Mother’s Body, Son’s Future

Mother’s Body, Son’s Future

Steven Keanin stood in the soft afternoon light filtering through the half-drawn curtains of his mother’s bedroom. At twenty, average in build-neither particularly broad nor slight-he moved with the quiet familiarity of someone who had done this before. The room still carried the faint scent of her perfume, a mix of something floral and clean that clung to the fabrics.

He opened the closet doors. Rows of dresses, blouses, and skirts hung in careful order. His fingers trailed along the hangers, pausing on a soft, dark floral dress with a fitted bodice and a flared skirt that would fall just below the knee. He lifted it free, holding it against himself for a moment before setting it aside on the bed. A lightweight cardigan in a complementary shade followed. From a lower shelf he selected a pair of low-heeled pumps that matched the dress’s palette.

Turning to the dresser, he opened the top drawer. Neatly folded lingerie waited inside. He chose a matching set in black lace-delicate bra and panties that felt cool and light in his hands. From the next drawer he drew a pair of sheer black stockings, the kind that required a garter belt. He found one, black and simple, and laid everything out carefully.

He undressed, folding his own clothes and setting them aside. First the stockings, smoothing them up each leg with practiced care, clipping them to the garter belt. Then the panties and bra, adjusting the straps until they sat right. The dress slipped over his head; he zipped it at the side and smoothed the fabric down. The cardigan settled over his shoulders. The pumps completed the silhouette.

He sat at the vanity. Cosmetics waited in their usual places. Foundation first, blended carefully. Then powder, a soft blush along the cheekbones, eyeliner drawn with a steady hand, mascara, and a muted lipstick. He studied the reflection for a long moment, making small adjustments until the transformation felt complete.

The front door opened downstairs.

Steven froze. His mother’s voice called out something ordinary about having forgotten a file. Footsteps moved through the house, climbing the stairs sooner than he expected. There was no time to strip everything off. He scrambled toward the far side of the bed, heart hammering, and tried to drop out of sight behind it.

Valerie stepped into the bedroom doorway and stopped.

She saw him-dressed in her clothes, her lingerie, her stockings, her makeup-half-hidden and entirely visible. For a beat neither of them spoke.

Steven’s face burned. He stayed half-crouched behind the bed, the soft fabric of the dress brushing his knees, the stockings whispering against each other whenever he shifted. Every instinct screamed to rip everything off, but there was no time and nowhere to hide the evidence.

“I-I can explain,” he managed, voice cracking. The words tumbled out in a rush: how it had started as curiosity years ago, how the soft fabrics and the careful rituals had become something he returned to when the house was empty, how he never meant for anyone to see. He wasn’t trying to be her. He just… liked the way it felt. The admission left him hollow with embarrassment.

Valerie leaned against the doorframe, arms loosely crossed. A small, knowing smile played at the corners of her mouth.

“So this is what you do when I’m out?”

The playful tone only made his ears hotter. He shook his head quickly, searching for something that sounded less pathetic.

“I just… I wanted to feel closer to you. To understand what it’s like. To be a little more like you.”

Valerie’s smile deepened. She stepped fully into the room and closed the door behind her with a soft click.

“You can be,” she said.

Steven blinked. “What?”

She walked closer, stopping a few feet away, still studying him in her clothes and makeup as though the sight confirmed something she had already half-suspected.
