New Expections Kelly-Ann sat at her desk, eyes narrowed as she scrolled through an email thread. She let out an exasperated sigh, pushing her chair back before turning to her co-worker, Jeremy, who sat a few cubicles over. "Jeremy, I swear, being a woman in this office is exhausting," she muttered, crossing her arms. Jeremy looked up from his screen, eyebrows raised. "What do you mean?" Kelly-Ann shook her head, leaning against the cubicle wall. "The expectations, the subtle pressure, it's ridiculous. I mean, I can't just show up, do my job, and go home like you can. I have to look 'presentable'---whatever that means. Makeup, hair done, a professional yet feminine outfit. God forbid I wear the same blouse two weeks in a row without someone commenting." Jeremy frowned, his expression sympathetic. "I never really thought about that. I just throw on a suit and tie, and no one says anything." "Exactly!" Kelly-Ann huffed. "It's like there's this unspoken standard. And don't get me started on how I have to smile all the time. If I don't, I'm 'moody' or 'unapproachable.' Meanwhile, if one of the guys here doesn't smile, no one even notices." Jeremy nodded slowly, now fully engaged in her frustrations. "Yeah, that does sound unfair." "And the meetings," Kelly-Ann continued, her voice rising slightly, "I speak up with ideas, and I get interrupted or ignored. But when John or Matt says the exact same thing five minutes later, suddenly it's brilliant." Jeremy leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. "Wow. I mean, I've seen it happen, but I didn't really realize how often. It's messed up." Kelly-Ann sighed again, rubbing her temples. "It just wears you down, you know? I just want to be treated like everyone else. I want my work to speak for itself, not how I look or how much I smile." Jeremy nodded, looking more thoughtful than before. "I wish I could help you." Kelly-Ann gave him an odd smile. "Thanks, Jeremy. You can!" At that instant, Kelly-Ann transferred expectations to Jeremy. Jeremy from this point going forward has all the expectations of Kelly-Ann and vice versa. The most noticeable change was how they were dressed. Although both were wearing a suit, Jeremy's suit had become pink with a matching skirt. He was wearing pantyhose and shoes with a two-inch heel were at the side of his desk. Makeup covered his face. "What's going on?" "I exchanged our expectations. Everyone will expect from you what they would have expected from me." Jeremy looked at Kelly-Ann. He thought for a moment, "At least I don't have to wear a tie anymore. He also naively thought that Kelly-Ann was skating by on her looks as no one expected anything from her." Jeremy's male ego took over though. "You can't do this. I don't want to be treated like a woman. I'm a man."
