Paid To Do What They Truly Loved - Extended Version

The Reality Setting devices hummed softly in the library, their sleek, futuristic hairdryer-like forms glowing with a faint, ethereal light. David had spent the morning calibrating them with care, inputting parameters for a series of subtle career simulations-nothing too drastic, just gentle explorations of “what if” paths for his own professional life. His daughters, Lila and Sarah, were supposed to be at sleepovers all night, so the house felt peacefully empty. He hadn’t noticed the girls slipping back in earlier that afternoon, giggling as they fiddled with the glowing panels on the two machines.

Lila had twirled in front of one device, eyes sparkling. “I would love to own a dance studio.”

Sarah had nodded eagerly, tapping buttons with childish delight. “Yeah, where only girls would attend. No boys at all.”

“All the girls there would be our friends,” Lila added, her voice dreamy.

“We would help all of them because that is what friends do,” Sarah chimed in.

“You know what? We could wear pretty dance outfits all day,” Lila finished with a grin, “even when we weren’t at work.”

They had flipped the awareness toggle to off without understanding what it meant, then reset the main dials to something far more whimsical than their father’s careful career settings. Satisfied with their secret game, they had dashed back out to their friends’ houses, leaving the machines humming innocently.

That evening, David and his wife Harmony settled into the large, comfortable chairs beneath the devices. David didn’t bother double-checking the controls-he was confident in his morning setup. He reached over and squeezed Harmony’s hand.

“Ready for a little adventure?” he asked with a smile.

“Always,” she replied, leaning back as the soft blue glow enveloped them both.

The Reality Setting devices whirred to life.

A warm, tingling wave washed over them. The air shimmered, and the world around them folded and refolded like silk. When the light faded, everything had changed.

Harmony blinked down at herself. She was wearing an adorable pastel lilac princess-style dress, the fitted bodice sparkling with tiny sequins that caught the light like stars. The fluffy, layered tulle skirt floated around her legs, twirling gently with even the slightest movement. A delicate satin ribbon bow in the same soft lilac cinched her waist. On her feet were sparkly silver ballet flats adorned with tiny bows on the toes. Her hair had transformed into soft, loose curls cascading over her shoulders, crowned with a shimmering silver tiara and dotted with playful, colorful hair clips. A dainty pearl necklace and matching bracelet completed the look, making her feel light, graceful, and utterly enchanting.

David looked down and felt a strange, distant surprise that quickly melted away. He was dressed in a delicate pale yellow leotard with short, puffed sleeves and a small, shimmering green tutu that swayed playfully around his hips. Soft pale yellow dance tights hugged his legs, ending in shiny green ballet slippers. His hair-now longer and neatly styled-fell into two sweet braids, each tied with tiny green ribbons that bounced with every motion. Pale yellow wristbands circled his wrists, and slung over his shoulder was a small green dance bag decorated with cheerful yellow stars.

For a brief moment, a flicker of confusion crossed both their minds. David opened his mouth, perhaps to question the glowing machines or the frilly outfits. Harmony touched the tulle of her skirt, feeling the fabric swish delightfully.

Then the mental changes settled in fully.

The last traces of bewilderment vanished like morning mist. A soft, happy smile spread across Harmony’s face as she rose gracefully from the chair, her lilac skirt flaring out in a perfect twirl.

“Oh, this feels wonderful,” she said, her voice light and musical. She gave a little spin, watching the layers of tulle dance around her. “Don’t you just love our new dance outfits?”

David stood too, adjusting the strap of his green dance bag with a contented sigh. The green tutu fluttered as he moved, and he couldn’t help but point his toes in the shiny ballet slippers. “They’re so pretty,” he agreed happily, his braids swaying. “Perfect for the studio.”

Harmony took his hand, her pearl bracelet glinting. “Our dance studio. Just for girls. All our friends will come every day, and we’ll help them become the best dancers they can be-because that’s what friends do.”

David nodded, eyes bright with uncomplicated joy. “No boys allowed. Only us and all the sweet girls who want to dance and have fun. We can wear these outfits all day long, even when we’re just having tea or picking flowers in the garden.”

They both laughed, the sound bright and carefree. The large house around them had subtly shifted too-walls now adorned with mirrors and ballet barres, shelves of books replaced by colorful dance posters and racks of sparkling costumes. Outside the windows, the neighborhood looked softer, more pastel, as if the whole world had been gently repainted to match their new reality.

“Come on,” Harmony said, giving David’s hand a gentle tug. Her silver ballet flats made soft, delicate sounds on the floor. “Let’s go practice our twirls before our friends arrive tomorrow. I want everything to be perfect for them.”

David followed eagerly, his green tutu bouncing and his braids swinging. “Yes! And we’ll make sure every girl feels beautiful and happy. That’s the most important part.”

As they moved through their transformed home toward the sunlit studio space that had once been the living room, neither of them remembered the old settings, the career tests, or the brief moment of confusion. The Reality Setting devices sat quietly in the library, their glow dimmed, content to have woven a new, whimsical world.
