Seems So Real 2
Chapter 1 Raul stood frozen in the middle of the bedroom, staring at the mirror. Just minutes ago he had been laughing at the idea of virtual reality becoming this convincing. Now his smile had faded into a tight knot of unease. The woman in the mirror stared back. She looked to be around sixty-maybe a little younger, maybe a little older. Her wavy gray hair rested on her shoulders, parted neatly on the right side. Her face was familiar in the way neighborhood faces become familiar: seen while walking past houses, glimpsed through hedges, noticed at the grocery store checkout. Laurie Hopkins. Raul swallowed. He lifted a hand slowly. The woman in the mirror lifted hers too. The body he felt was not his. His normal twenty-six-year-old body-tall, lean, and athletic-was gone. Instead he felt the strange weight and shape of someone older. The worn bra lifted and supported a pair of breasts he could feel with unsettling clarity. The snug girdle hugged his hips and smoothed his backside. The pantyhose clung tightly to his legs and feet, every step producing a faint whisper of nylon against nylon. “Okay... okay...” Raul muttered, hearing Laurie's older, softer voice come from his mouth. He forced a nervous chuckle. “Just... really good VR.” He had meant to experience life as a young woman-something adventurous, something different. Instead he must have selected the wrong avatar. The system had given him the body of someone decades older. Still... the simulation was astonishing. The room around him looked completely real. Pale coral walls. White trim. A vanity table with brushes and perfume bottles. Floral curtains letting in warm sunlight. Everything radiated the tidy, feminine atmosphere of someone who took pride in her home. Curious now, Raul walked to the closet. Inside hung neatly arranged clothing: skirts, blouses, dresses, cardigans organized by color. “Well... if I’m stuck here for the session,” he said, “might as well see how she dresses.” He chose an outfit that caught his eye. First came a soft pastel pink blouse. The lace around the collar and cuffs felt delicate against his skin as he buttoned it up. The sleeves billowed slightly when he moved his arms. Next he stepped into a high-waisted A-line skirt. The floral pattern-lavender, green, and cream-gave it a cheerful elegance. He smoothed the fabric over his hips, surprised at how natural the motion felt. He slipped on beige ballet flats with tiny bows. Finally he added accessories: pearl stud earrings, a small gold pendant necklace, and a shoulder-strap purse. Raul stepped back to the mirror. Laurie Hopkins stood there, looking like she was heading out for a pleasant afternoon. He tilted his head. “This is... wild.” After a moment he shrugged and slung the purse strap over his shoulder. “Let’s see the neighborhood.” --- The outside world felt just as real. Warm sunlight brushed his face as he walked down the quiet suburban street. The gentle breeze moved his skirt slightly as he walked. At first Raul moved awkwardly, adjusting to the unfamiliar body and clothing. But gradually his steps became smoother. The ballet flats padded softly against the sidewalk. A man watering his lawn waved. “Afternoon, Laurie!” Raul hesitated-but only briefly. He lifted a hand and smiled politely. “Afternoon!” A woman walking her dog slowed beside him. “Lovely day for the park, isn’t it?” Raul tried to imagine how Laurie Hopkins might respond. “Oh yes,” he said warmly. “Perfect weather.” The woman smiled and continued on. Raul couldn’t help grinning. This was incredible. He was walking through the neighborhood as someone completely different-older, female, someone people recognized. At the park he sat on a bench for a while, watching children play and listening to birds in the trees. People greeted him casually, as though he truly belonged in this life. For a moment he almost forgot it was supposed to be virtual.
