Something Isn't Right

Something Isn't Right

At the finest restaurant in town, three couples were enjoying an elegant dinner beneath crystal chandeliers and soft golden lights. Margaret, Elaine, and Patricia had been friends for years, and tonight they had all happened to bring their husbands along.

After dinner was cleared away, Margaret dabbed her lips with her napkin and rose from the table.

“Excuse me. I’m going to the ladies’ room.”

Elaine immediately stood. “I’ll come with you.”

Patricia laughed and pushed back her chair. “Might as well. I need to go, too.”

Their husbands exchanged amused looks.

“All three of you?” Margaret’s husband, Robert, said with a chuckle.

“You know what that means,” Elaine’s husband, Thomas, teased. “Women’s stuff.”

Patricia’s husband, Edward, shook his head dramatically. “Probably going to spend half an hour talking about us.”

The three women rolled their eyes.

“Oh, please,” Margaret said. “We’ll be back in five minutes.”

The women walked away, unaware that someone else had been watching them from across the restaurant.

A strange figure known only as the Trait Swapper had chosen them as his latest targets. With a concealed device in his hand, he waited until the three women disappeared around the corner.

A brief pulse of invisible energy swept through the hallway.

Inside the ladies’ room, Margaret, Elaine, and Patricia suddenly froze.

For a moment, nothing appeared to have happened.

Their clothes were exactly as they had been.

Margaret still wore her pastel pink knee-length dress with its white sailor-style lace collar, pleated bib, puffed short sleeves, and white tie belt. Her thick white headband remained perfectly in place, as did her rounded white pumps.

Elaine still wore her white knee-length dress patterned with pink flowers. The V-neck was edged with lace, and her puffed elbow-length sleeves ended in ruffled cuffs. Her tied waist belt, ruffled hem, pink hair bow, white clip-on earrings, and white bangles were all unchanged.

Patricia's light blue knee-length dress was likewise untouched. Its oversized white scalloped lace collar rested neatly against her shoulders, while the puffed short sleeves, self-tie belt, white hair accessory, and white slingback pumps remained exactly where they belonged.

Yet something was profoundly wrong.

Margaret stared into the mirror.

“Do I look strange to you?”

Elaine examined her reflection beside her. “I was just about to ask you the same thing.”

Patricia turned toward them. “Something definitely feels...off.”

They looked at one another, baffled.

None of them could identify the problem.

Margaret raised a hand to her face, expecting to find something different. Elaine adjusted her pink bow. Patricia checked her collar.

Everything seemed normal.

Except their bodies weren't.

The three women had somehow been given the bodies of their husbands.

Margaret now possessed Robert's face, build, and unmistakably masculine features. Elaine had Thomas's body, while Patricia had Edward's. Their elegant dresses and accessories had remained completely unchanged, producing an impossible contrast that none of them seemed capable of consciously recognizing.

Margaret frowned at the mirror.

“I know something is wrong.”

“What?” Elaine asked.

“I don't know.”

Patricia stepped closer to the mirror. “Neither do I.”

For several seconds, the three stared at their reflections.
