The APP

Catherine Collins, a devoted mother in her late 40s, stands at a crossroads in her life. With light brown hair streaked with silver and a face that shows both her warmth and worry, she exudes a quiet strength but carries the burden of her concerns for her son, Earnest. A recent high school graduate, Earnest just turned 18, yet Catherine struggles to see him as the adult society expects him to be. He is short and fair-skinned, with messy dark hair and an easy grin that often masks his lack of responsibility. Catherine watches him navigate life with a carefree attitude, content to stay cocooned in his world of video games and late-night escapades, which only deepens her anxiety about his future.

Today's appointment with Dr. Zaaijer, the family therapist she has been seeing for the past few months, is especially heavy on her mind. The sun hangs low in the sky, casting warm golden hues on the suburban streets as she drives the familiar route to the therapy office. The building, a quaint, brick structure adorned with sprawling ivy and large, welcoming windows, feels like a sanctuary amidst her worries. Inside, the calming scent of lavender greets her, and the soft sound of water trickling from a decorative fountain adds to the soothing atmosphere.

As Catherine waits in the softly-lit reception area, she reflects on Dr. Zaaijer's insights. The therapist has consistently encouraged her to think creatively about her parenting approach. Today, Catherine hopes to find solutions that will help Earnest cultivate maturity and responsibility. She can't shake the feeling that time is slipping through her fingers, and she worries for him---how he'll manage relationships, finances, and a future career if he remains in a perpetual state of adolescence.

Once called into Dr. Zaaijer's cozy office, furnished with plush chairs and shelves lined with psychology books, Catherine sits down, her heart racing with the intensity of her emotions. Dr. Zaaijer listens intently as Catherine shares her most recent worries---Earnest's careless habits, his lack of ambition, and the unrelenting feeling that he's drifting further away from adulthood. The therapist suggests an innovative approach: an app called BLOOM, designed to encourage personal growth and accountability in young adults. Dr. Zaaijer assures her that this APP will make Earnest into a new person.

The idea resonates with Catherine, who feels a spark of hope as Dr. Zaaijer describes the success stories of other young adults like Earnest who have benefitted from the app. Catherine leaves the session feeling a mix of relief and determination.

Once home, she reflects on the prospect of installing BLOOM on Earnest's phone. The thought crosses her mind that Earnest may resist or reject it if he finds out, viewing it as one more instance of her trying to control him. In a moment of resolve, Catherine decides to install the app without his knowledge. The decision feels both stealthy and protective---as if she's giving him a nudge toward the maturity she believes he needs without pushing him away.

Catherine tapped her freshly manicured nails against the kitchen counter as she watched her son, Earnest, through the window. The 18-year-old was sprawled on the grass in their backyard, his faded jeans and oversized hoodie contrasting sharply with the flower garden surrounding him. He was laughing with a group of boys, tossing a football back and forth. Catherine sighed. Earnest was a good kid, but Catherine worried about his lack of direction.

Catherine picked up her phone and opened the sleek, inconspicuous app she had recently downloaded from Dr. Zaaijer. It was called Bloom, and its purpose was simple: gently encourage positive habits through subliminal messaging.

The app worked silently in the background, sending subtle, affirming suggestions through Earnest's phone. It wouldn't nag or overtly change her behavior. Instead, it would weave small, incremental nudges into Earnest's day, encouraging him to adopt habits and values that Catherine believed would serve him well in life.

Catherine hesitated for a moment, then tapped the button to install Bloom onto Earnest's phone remotely. She justified the decision to herself: it wasn't controlling. It was just...helpful guidance.

Over the next few weeks, Earnest began to change, though the shifts were so subtle that he hardly noticed them himself. One morning, he stood in front of his closet, frowning at his usual hoodie-and-jeans combo. For reasons he couldn't quite explain, he felt like wearing something nicer. When he couldn't find something he liked in his own closet, he decided to look through the closet in his parent's room. Instead of selecting his father's slacks, he selected a pair of his mother's slacks with a white blouse. Shrugging, he put it on. When he caught his reflection in the mirror, he blinked. He looked...nice.

His phone chimed with a notification: “Confidence blooms when you embrace your unique style.” Earnest smiled and decided to keep the outfit on.
