The Body That Goes With It

The Body That Goes With It

Brian slipped into Victoria’s hotel room and quietly closed the door behind him. He had expected the room to be empty, and for once, everything seemed to be going according to plan. Then he noticed Victoria’s swimsuit laid across the bed.

The vintage-style one-piece was a striking deep teal, covered with yellow and white orchid flowers and pale leaves. It had a sweetheart neckline, a gathered bust, and carefully fitted panels that gave it an almost girdle-like silhouette. Sitting directly on top of it was the strange object Brian had been searching for-the Medallion of Zulo.

Brian reached for the medallion.

His fingers brushed the swimsuit.

There was a sudden flash of light.

Brian staggered backward. For a moment, he could see nothing but a brilliant blue-white glow. Then the sensation began. His entire body seemed to shift at once, as though his shape were being rearranged from the inside out. His shoulders narrowed, his frame changed, and his clothes suddenly became impossibly loose. His voice caught in his throat as he looked down at himself.

He was staring at an exact copy of Victoria's body.

"What...?"

Brian barely had time to process what had happened before his pants slipped around his ankles. His shirt hung absurdly loose around his transformed frame. There was no way he could walk through the hotel like this.

His eyes immediately went to the swimsuit.

"Oh, no."

But there wasn't exactly a better option.

Brian hurriedly pulled on the deep-teal swimsuit, adjusting it as best he could while trying not to think about the fact that it fit him perfectly. He then spotted Victoria's matching deep-teal high-heel pumps beside the bed. He slipped them on, grabbed the Medallion of Zulo, and stuffed his discarded clothes under one arm.

He had to get back to his room.

Fast.

Brian cracked open the door and peered into the hallway. Nobody seemed to be nearby. He stepped outside.

Click.

The heels immediately made him regret every decision that had brought him there.

He took a cautious step, then another. The swimsuit was bad enough. The heels made him feel as though the entire hotel could hear every movement he made.

Then someone rounded the corner.

Brian froze.

A couple walking toward the elevators glanced at him. They were dressed in ordinary hotel-casual clothes-shorts, polo shirts, sandals, and light summer dresses. Brian suddenly became painfully aware that he was the only person in the entire hallway wearing a swimsuit.

He lowered his head and tried to walk normally.

"Good afternoon," one of them said.
