The Mansion

The Mansion

Warren had expected concrete walls, steel bars, and the blunt arithmetic of a ten-year sentence. What he received instead was a black car with tinted windows and a quiet drive into the countryside.

The mansion rose from manicured lawns like something preserved from another century-pale stone, tall sash windows, iron balconies, and ivy climbing the walls in careful patterns. Victorian, the paperwork had called it. Lady Training Facility. An alternative sentence. Ten years, with the possibility of parole for good behavior. He had signed without understanding how thoroughly the fine print would rewrite him.

Inside, the air smelled of beeswax and cut flowers. A woman in a severe black dress met him in the foyer. She did not offer her name.

“Your room is prepared. The wardrobe is stocked. Your choker is already fitted. You will not remove it.”

The choker locked around his throat with a soft mechanical click. A wide band of supple leather lined with something that hummed faintly against his skin. The moment it sealed, his voice changed. When he tried to speak, the sound that emerged was higher, thinner, unmistakably feminine. He stopped mid-sentence.

She handed him a small beaded purse on a short chain.

“Ten feet,” she said. “Any farther and the pressure on your larynx becomes instructive. You will learn to keep it close.”

He tested the limit that first evening. At eleven feet the choker tightened like a living hand. He stumbled back, gasping, and never let the purse leave his side again.

Makeup was absolute. Without eyeshadow his eyelids grew heavy and refused to stay open; the world dimmed until he applied the soft colors kept in the vanity. Without lipstick his lips sealed shut, the muscles locking so he could neither speak nor eat. The shades were always gentle-rose, soft pink, the palette of a young woman. Earrings completed the circuit. Without them the world went silent. With them in place, a calm feminine voice whispered directly into his ears-never commands, only observations and gentle corrections.

“The navy blouse would sit nicely with the cream skirt.” “Those shoes have more heel today. Smaller steps.” “Smooth the fabric when you sit.”

Every morning began the same way. The voice in his ears woke him at 6:30 with a soft reminder. He rose, bathed in the claw-foot tub with the rose-scented soap provided, dried himself carefully, and stood before the open closets and drawers. Hundreds of garments waited: lingerie in pale pastels and soft neutrals, blouses of silk and cotton, skirts of every length, dresses, cardigans, stockings, belts, and rows of heels.

He never knew which combination had been chosen for the day. The process always required the same slow, deliberate search.

He began with lingerie. He lifted a pair of soft pink lace briefs, held them against his skin, and waited. A faint itch crawled across his hips. Wrong. He returned them and selected a pair of ivory satin ones instead. The itch vanished. Next came a matching bra. He tried a structured white one first-heat bloomed between his shoulder blades. Wrong. A soft, lightly padded rose-colored bra silenced the heat at once. He fastened it carefully, adjusting the straps until they sat evenly.

Then the blouse. He pulled a cream silk one from its hanger, slipped it on, and buttoned it. A mild prickling rose along his arms. He removed it and tried a pale blue cotton blouse with a modest collar. The prickling faded, but a residual tightness remained around his waist. He added a thin white cardigan. The tightness eased. Not quite. He exchanged the cardigan for a soft gray one with pearl buttons. The sensation disappeared completely.

The skirt came next. A navy A-line that fell just below the knee produced an immediate crawling heat down his thighs. He returned it and selected a soft gray pencil skirt that matched the cardigan. Perfect. Stockings followed-sheer nude, never patterned. The wrong pair left his calves itching; the correct pair settled against his skin without protest. He smoothed them carefully, making certain the seams ran straight.
