Two In One

Two In One

Maria Rojas had rehearsed the conversation in her mind a dozen times before stepping into the Andrews' study. The polished room, lined with bookshelves and overlooking the immaculate gardens she had spent years helping maintain, suddenly felt much smaller. Across from her sat Lionel and Julia Andrews, both wearing expressions that suggested they believed the discussion would be brief.

"It isn't that I'm unwilling to work," Maria said calmly. "But there are only so many hours in a day."

Lionel folded his hands. "We simply expect the household to be maintained to the standard we've become accustomed to."

"It was maintained," Maria replied. "Until you kept adding responsibilities."

Julia nodded matter-of-factly. "We've asked for more frequent dusting, daily polishing, additional laundry, and fresh flowers every morning. Those are reasonable expectations."

Maria sighed.

"They might be," she answered, "if there were two maids."

Lionel frowned.

"There is one."

"Exactly." Maria spread her hands helplessly. "I'm one person. I can't be in two places at once."

The room became impossibly still.

For a heartbeat, every sound vanished.

Then a warm shimmer swept through the study like sunlight passing through crystal.

Everything shifted.

---

Maria blinked.

She was no longer standing.

She was comfortably seated in Lionel's leather chair.

Her simple work uniform had disappeared.

Instead she wore a sleek sleeveless black cocktail dress that fit perfectly, ending just at her knees. The sweetheart neckline gave the dress an elegant appearance, and her long dark hair rested naturally over her shoulders.

Across the desk stood two stunned figures.

Lionel and Julia were dressed identically.

Each wore a neatly pressed pink button-front maid dress with a crisp white pointed collar and matching white breast-pocket accents. Long sleeves were rolled neatly to the forearms beneath spotless white aprons tied carefully at the waist. Taupe pantyhose disappeared into sensible white shoes.

Neither spoke.

Maria slowly looked around the room.

Every photograph now showed her.

The framed wedding portrait over the fireplace depicted Maria smiling confidently in formal attire while Lionel and Julia stood several steps behind her in immaculate maid uniforms.

The keys on the desk felt familiar.

The home felt familiar.

Not because she had worked there.

Because it belonged to her.

The realization settled into everyone's mind simultaneously.

The magic had rewritten reality.

Everything that had belonged to Lionel and Julia now belonged to Maria.

Everything that had belonged to Maria now belonged to Lionel and Julia.

---

Maria rose gracefully.

"I believe," she said evenly, "our meeting has reached a conclusion."

Neither former homeowner moved.

She stepped around the desk and regarded them thoughtfully.

"You were concerned about the amount of work expected of one maid."

Julia looked around in disbelief.

"Our...our house..."

"My house," Maria corrected gently.

Lionel opened his mouth.

"This isn't-"

"It is."
