Until the Lessons Stick
David, Lewis, and Mitchell stood in a semi-circle in Mitchell’s bedroom. Though all three had once been men, their bodies now carried the soft curves, narrower shoulders, and smoother features of women. David faced Mitchell directly, the clear authority in the room. Lewis stood slightly to one side, already aligned with David’s expectations. David wore a short-sleeved V-neck satin blouse patterned in soft pastel vertical stripes of pink, blue, yellow, and white. A medium-blue, knee-length pleated skirt was cinched at her waist by a thin dark belt. A dark beaded necklace rested against her collarbone, a stack of bangles circled her left wrist, and she held a white clutch in her right hand. Sheer pantyhose and white open-toe high heels completed the look. Lewis wore a long-sleeved solid dark navy blouse with a modest U-neckline. Her white A-line skirt fell to the knee, printed with dark blue floral leaves, and was secured by a dark belt. A long white beaded necklace hung down her front, a thick white bangle sat on her left wrist, and she wore sheer pantyhose with ankle-strap sandals. Mitchell, the most recently changed, stood in a metallic champagne-gold minidress. The soft, shimmering fabric clung in a bodycon silhouette, with a plunging halter neckline, gathered and ruched panels over the bust, a thin gold accent near the neck loop, and dense horizontal ruching that followed the waist, hips, and short hem. A short beaded necklace, bracelets on her left wrist, a white clutch in her right hand, black textured pantyhose, and white open-toe heels finished the outfit. David’s expression was one of clear disappointment. “You’re a woman now, Mitchell,” she said, voice steady and cold. “That means you act like one. Proper posture, proper manners, proper clothing. This-” she gestured at the short, tight, glittering dress “-is not acceptable. You don’t get to dress like you’re still trying to prove something.” Mitchell’s jaw tightened. “I didn’t ask for any of this. I’m not going to start playing house just because you say so.” Lewis glanced between them but remained silent, already agreeing with David’s stance. David stepped closer. “You will conform. You will learn to move, speak, and present yourself as a proper woman. This is not a suggestion.” |
